No Match for Her - Berkeley Hills series Book 6 - by Stacy Travis

“I decided it wasn’t smart for me to gamble my heart on you.”

No Match for Her, an all-new swoon-worthy slow burn romance from bestselling author Stacy Travis is available now!

ABOUT THE BOOK

I need a date to my brother’s wedding in six weeks, and Charlie Walgrove owns a tux. Billionaires are like that.

He’s also my sister’s boss, and I agree to let her set me up with the awkward genius, who apparently has even less luck in the dating game than a struggling artist, aka me.

We’re total opposites, but the date goes okay. We agree to be friends, the kind who won’t become lovers.

Famous last words.

On a series of “friend dates” involving bar snacks, acrylic paint and hedgehogs, I discover that Charlie is nothing like what I expected. Under his hoodie and glasses, he’s handsome and down-to-earth, stuck in a job he hates and afraid to disappoint people by walking away. His heart is as gorgeous as his hidden face.

I’ve always felt like the flaky sister in my family, but Charlie sees me as the artist I want to be. As our friendship deepens, so do my feelings for him. Maybe I’m even falling in love.

But gambling with my heart feels dangerous when all my relationships end in failure–especially if he’s only looking for a friend.

Is it only princesses that get a Happy Ever After? Or is there hope for a hot mess like me?

EXCERPT FROM THE BOOK

I’M WEARING RED. It’s a fire engine color that matches my lips and my toenail polish. It’s tasteful, sleeveless, and fitted. I’m hoping it says confident artist, which I don’t feel at all. I’m hoping it doesn’t tell everyone in the room that, on what should be a night of personal victory, my heart still lies in pieces on the gallery floor. I really hope red doesn’t say that.

I still haven’t talked to Charlie. Pulling together the show on relatively short notice has all but consumed me, and I feel like I need to prove to myself that I can take the first step as an artist alone before I investigate what he and I can be together.

Right now, I feel certain the thumping organ in my chest would laugh off the suggestion of anyone getting close to it. Ever again.

With his expression of love, Charlie opened a floodgate that I’d stubbornly wedged closed. I’m the one who chose to drown.

Sadly, more than half the paintings on the walls of the gallery are barely dry, some painted in a frenzy of self-loathing anguish that left me emotionally spent but artistically inspired, along with more than a dozen pieces that are oddly uplifting. Everywhere I look, I see evidence of Charlie.

People are starting to filter through the doors of the gallery space. Or maybe they’ve been here for an hour. I don’t know. I’m looking at them through some sort of fugue state.

If I could, I’d pick up a brush right now and paint through a new emotion twisting in my chest—longing. More than anything, I wish Charlie were here to celebrate this moment with me because he inspired it. Or at least he pushed me out of my comfort zone enough to embrace what my heart has been urging me to do for years.

The gallery space sits in the bottom floor of an art deco building on a corner in downtown Palo Alto, several blocks from the Stanford campus. The surrounding streets boast a collection of restaurants, cafés, wine bars, and retail spaces, so even people who haven’t received invitations to my exhibit are likely to stop in on their walk to someplace else. That has to be the explanation for why the three adjoining rooms suddenly feel noisy with voices. I only invited a handful of people—the design group from work, my family, and a couple of people who play mahjongg with Tatum and me.

“This is amazing!” Becca and Blake are the first of my family members to arrive, which surprises me because they don’t live nearby, and Becca is reliably late. They’re joined a minute later by Isla and Tatum who drove together. “Owen sends his love, and his regrets. He’s stuck in Napa. Some issue at one of the wine cellars.

“Donovan too. Away game tomorrow, and they’re en route.”

“Oh, no regrets. I’m so happy you’re all here. And a little freaked out, honestly, to have this many people looking at my artwork.”

“But your paintings are beautiful. They’re lucky to see them, I’m so proud of you,” Sarah says, hugging me. “Braden’s at the station, so I’m going to spend all our money and buy a big canvas for our house.”

“Okay, now you’re gonna make me cry, and you know how long I spent on my mascara.”

“Ha!” This from Tatum who squeezes in and hugs me. “If I learned anything from you, it’s that you always wear waterproof mascara in case of unexpected emotion.

“Wow, help a person with her makeup, and she throws it back in your face. Fine. It’s waterproof. I was being melodramatic.”

“Melodramatic, you?” Tatum pretends to look baffled. Sarah leans in and drags her away. “Come help me decide which painting to buy. I heard someone say there are crab puffs and I’m hungry.”

“There are crab puffs. Look for waiters. They’re supposed to be mingling,” I call after them, realizing I haven’t eaten anything since breakfast. Nerves.

The others follow them, and the temporary balloon that lifted my spirits starts to sag again. I know it’s ridiculous to miss Charlie at a moment when I should be celebrating, but I can’t help it. I wish he was here.

But we still haven’t spoken since our blowup the night he brought me here, and he’s respected my request for space. A little too well. He’s stopped texting and calling after a couple check-ins to ask if I was okay. I hoped that not responding would make me clearheaded enough to avoid hurling myself into the next disastrous decision, as I’m prone to do.

Now I just miss him.

The thinking has settled my mind in that I know I want two things: to paint as much as possible and to be with Charlie as much as possible. I love him and I need him. It’s as much a certainty as the sun rising every morning.

I also need to apologize to him for making him the scapegoat of my insecurities, and I haven’t figured out what to say about that yet. But I will.

I glance around and see that the number of people has already doubled in the one room where I stand with an untouched glass of champagne dribbling condensation down my arm. On every white wall within my line of sight, work I’ve painted hangs beneath perfect lighting. Tiny signs indicate the titles and prices of the pieces, but I don’t expect any of them to sell. It’s my first show, and I feel lucky the gallery owner liked the images I emailed her.

I’m even luckier that one of her clients had to postpone his show, leaving a three-day opening in the schedule. It felt like a sign when she called to ask if I had enough work and felt ready to mount a show.

The past two weeks have been a blur of paint and canvases during every hour I wasn’t at work. I painted feverishly, blocking out every useless emotion I could and letting the fruitful ones past my walls to guide me.

The result is fourteen canvasses, many of them large enough to command a wall on their own, all replete with deep jewel tones, abstract lines, and intense themes of renewal and hope. I have no idea where those feelings came from because I felt a lot of despair. But painting kept me from spending all my waking hours worrying that I’d destroyed the best friendship I’ve ever had.

Now, when I look at each painting, I can’t help but feel the memory of the headspace I was in when I painted it. They all reflect some aspect of Charlie—kinship, love, and heartbreak— and those are three things I’d rather not focus on tonight, so I need to stop looking.

That leaves me staring into my champagne with little enthu‐ siasm for it. Sylvia, the gallery owner, sweeps over to me, her navy layered caftan grazing the tops of brown rugged boots. Her gray hair is impeccably styled in its pageboy and her lips are redder than mine.

“So far, so good, love. It’s a success. You’re a success.” She kisses me on the cheek and moves on to speak to a tall man in a navy suit who beckons her over with a question.

The words echo in her wake as I try to figure out whether she’s just being nice. What constitutes a success at one of these gallery nights? A big crowd of mostly-strangers? I’m just proud of myself for taking a step toward feeling like a legitimate artist.

I have only read two books in this series. I read the previous book, PLAYING FOR YOU,  about Cherry's sister, Tatum and fell really hard for Cherry and Tatum's nerdy boss, Charlie. While I enjoyed the previous book, I LOVED this story so much. Cherry and Charlie were such an awesome couple and I loved them together so much. It has a bit of instalove on Charlie's part but also it all starts with the worst blind date ever (with Tatum and Donavan) and gets awesome from there.

This is the last book in the series and it was an awesome conclusion and a great story for both Cherry and Charlie. These two have a lot in common but not if you don't delve into their characters. They are both professionals who are successful but not doing the thing they love and they are very lonely and unlucky in love.

When Charlie first sees Cherry he is captivated but he is just getting divorced and knows he needs time before he is ready to adventure into love with her. So he waits a few years and when Cherry needs a wedding date, he sees his chance. But with others on the date, it does not go well and Cherry only sees his sisters boss and not the awesome guy that Charlie is.

Until they run into each other by coincidence or fate and she starts to see how awesome he is and sees how much in common they actually have. Thats when this story really takes off and I adored this romance so much.

BAD TIMING by Kristie Leigh

ABOUT THE BOOK

Bad Timing is a light, snarky, sexy, standalone contemporary romance with plenty of laughs, emotional moments, and steam.

Layla

Blue eyes through a windshield. That was all I saw before he hit me with his car.

When I woke up in the hospital, I was shocked to find Mr. Blue Eyes there in all his GQ glory—and even more surprised that he was willing to watch over me while I recovered.

See, Cole was my polar opposite. Even though I had agreed to help him sort out his family issues, falling for him was never part of the plan.

Too bad planning was never my strong suit…

Cole

The way we met? Classic bad timing. But she was exactly what I needed.

Because if I wanted to break free of my family’s demands forever, I needed my inheritance. And the only way to get that was to marry.

A marriage of convenience to the tattooed free spirit I had hit with my car could solve all my problems.

Falling in love with her, however, could cause so many new ones. Logically, I knew that.

But when it came to Layla, my heart didn’t care at all about logic—or Bad Timing…

ABOUT THE AUTHOR
Meet Kristie Leigh

I'm a feisty redheaded Canadian/American who fell in love with romance novels when my friend Phil bought me a Kindle that hasn't left my side since.

My favorite books to read are anything taboo and super sick and twisted. I'm not sure I will ever write anything dark, but I would love to give it a shot one day.

I live in South Florida with my high school sweetheart and three kids. I grew up in Burlington, ON, Canada but made the move to South Florida in 2013 and definitely don't miss the snow.

I'm not sure where this writing journey will take me but either way, I know it will be a fun new adventure, and I'm super excited about it.

This was a really awesome story. It was the first time I read this author, but I was really impressed, and I plan to read more from her back list.

It stars Cole and Layla. Cole is not feeling the greatest as he is being forced to marry to keep his job and inheritance. He was going to marry one of his best friends, but she is getting engaged to a fellow friend. When he makes a mistake and runs over Layla.

Feeling bad he takes care of her and ends up meeting a very different woman than he had ever met before. He is caviar and social events, and she is tats and piercings but when they meet, he changes her life, and she changes his life.

This was a really fun story filled with romance between prince charming and his down on her luck princess. It's a story about love, friendship, family and finding your special someone and looking beyond the book cover.  It was a wonderfully light heartwarming, story, and I absolutely adored every minute of it.

I have loved this entire series from the very first book to this book. I didn't just love them I have adored them. They were military romances with lots of love and heart and I adored each couple. But this one was a really different one and while I enjoyed the couple, the troupe used I did not like and the issue between them I felt was what ruined this story for me.

Levi was a guy who dated Rebecca in High School. He loved her and saw only her and she loved him as well but when he entered the military she refused to date him and so they broke up and never spoke again. Years later Rebecca's best friend from high school, Mandy, meets up with Levi at her job at Oakside while he is recovering from military injuries and they fall for each other.

Now I knew this trope would be used but I didn't realise the degree that Rebecca would be able to impact this story especially as she never spoke to Levi again and she also is married and happily and is even pregnant in this story. I felt the main character, Mandy gave her too much power and while I understood why, Rebecca was not a good friend and she was a spiteful and bitter woman who had it all and still didn't want her supposed best friend to be happy. She treated her horribly in this story. And Levi in one scene played along and thats why I was not a fan of this story. If I had been Mandy, I would never have forgiven him for how he reacted.

Aside from Rebecca I would have liked this couple a lot. Had it just been a troupe and Rebecca not such a big part of this story I would have really liked Mandy and Levi together. Mandy was a fantastic character in this series and maybe thats why I felt so bad for her in this story. I loved how Noah and Lexi were a huge part of Mandy's life and how we get to see more of them in this story. We even get a snippets of their POV in this story and I loved how supportive they are of Mandy and Levi.

EXCERPT

When I’m near the pub, I shoot a message into the chat app to let him know I’m here. He messages back that he’s in a booth near the rear of the pub wearing a Northern University baseball cap. My heels click across the faux wooden floor on my way to the scattered tables and booths. In a far corner is a broad-shouldered man staring at his phone with a baseball cap concealing his face. I bet he’s one of those types that lives in the gym and stares at himself in the mirror.
A hint of a grin twists my lips as I approach. I cannot wait to see his face.
“BF?” I ask when I’m standing beside his table.
He glances up, and my heart stops. Holy fucking shit. Heat rushes through my body, followed by a jolt of ice cold.
It’s Brent Faulkner. My mouth drops open. He’s not the one who has been obsessively staring at his body. I am.
“Jensen?” He frowns and sits straighter in the booth.
“Brent Faulkner?” I’d recognize those golden-brown eyes, that angular face, and the jet-black hair anywhere.
“Your name is Jensen?”
“Posey. Posey Jensen.” I slide into the booth across from him. “You have a girlfriend.”
“You’re supposed to be a dude.” His lips twist in distaste. “I said no drama. Does this situation seem drama-free to you?”
I cross my arms and slump into the booth. Of course my thirst-trap secret crush would turn out to be Mr. No-Drama-rama judgmental jerk face. It annoys me to no end that I can’t stop scanning his features and comparing them to the hundreds of photos I’ve drooled over.
“Okay, so technically I never told you I was a dude. You assumed, I guess, based on my name.”
“I would have been less shocked if Jensen Ackles showed up here.”
“Yeah, sure. You and Jensen, slaying demons in Bermuda.” I roll my eyes. “Total bros weekend.”

This was my first read by this author and well I was in love with her writing, her characters and this story so much. Its a fake dating romance between two people who don't feel they want a serious relationship.

Brent is a swimmer who is very serious about it. He has a girlfriend but only because she accepts that he mostly ignores her. But he gets fed up with her and dumps her and then posts online that he has a plus one spot open for a wedding date. Posey is bored and decides to be his date and she is all about fun. Posey charms Brent just as she charmed me. Then they decide to carry it forward to get rid of his ex and I was all in. This story was seriously so fun.

One issue in this book is that Brent and Posey have very different dreams and that's why neither plans on getting attached or falling for each other. Brent discovers that if you are with the right person they can accept you but also your dreams become theirs. And Posey whose dream is to go back home, well she discovers that home is where the heart is but also love can make compromises.

This was a wonderful story about two college kids with BIG dreams and aspirations who find each other and learn that love is so much bigger than dreams and that anything can work if you want to make it work. It was a wonderful story with a little Angst but also lots of heart, love and friendship.

Due to a mold outbreak at her place, she's forced to relocate to a co-ed dorm as a senior. And to top it off, she finds out she's at risk of not graduating due to an error in her schedule. Talk about the worst senior year ever.

He's on his way out to an internship and almost done with school where he can leave his heartbreak and data foes behind.

Neither expected to form a friendship or know what to do about their insane chemistry. With late nights, inside jokes, and the rare comfort they find in each other... lines blur, and the popular girl gets with the nerdy guy. Only, Freddie's done this before and knows how it ends. His insecurities clash with Cami's need to be picked first, so when Freddie has to choose where to attend his internship, he can either pick the job or the girl. This is book 2 in a series, and it was absolutely awesome. I have not read the first book at all, but I loved this book so much its now on my to be read pile. It does easily stand alone. It's a college romance story between the popular cheerleading girl, Cami and the nerd, Freddie. They had previously met a year before and when she went home with another guy, she bruised his heart and since then has avoided her.

All this changes when they both end up out of their college apartment and instead are neighbors for a few months at the crappy college dorms with no AC but they also form a friendship at a time that Cami really needs it.

Cammie is supposed to have the best senior year and instead everything she loves she ends up losing. And that's when Freddie ends up entering her life and giving her a second chance at friendship. There is some drama with her coach as she is a cheerleader, and this plot line really enhanced this story as Cami has to learn to adapt and support a new team member and she really grows from this experience. I loved how she gets a team even when her coach is treating her so badly. I also really loved watching Cami's growth in this story and watching her really see who Freddie is. Freddie becomes her friend and then her support system as they both get to know each other.

Its one of the best second chance romances in college I have read and I only hated that it ended. Freddie and Cami were both awesome characters and this story was one that I loved every second reading.
