Love at The Bluebird by Aurora Rose Reynolds & Jessica Marin

Blurb

With a hit song sitting at number one on the country music charts, Gavin McNeer thought he finally had everything he ever wanted.

All it takes is one look from the mesmerizing woman sitting in the front row at one of his shows and a brief encounter to make him realize just what he’s been missing. Even though he’s been burnt in the past, Gavin puts his inhibitions aside and his heart on the line to earn the trust of the woman who could be his everything.

Working in an industry where relationships start and end in the blink of an eye, Alyson Dawson has made it her mission not to get mixed up with musicians, no matter how good-looking they are. Keeping her focus on her blossoming career and clients, Aly doesn’t even have time to date much less fall in love. That is until she meets Gavin, a man who changes everything with one smoldering look.

Just when these two begin to settle into their new relationship, Aly is asked to do something that may require her to choose between the career she’s building and the man she’s falling in love with. To make things worse, Gavin’s ex decides to add a touch of drama to an already delicate situation.

Will their love survive, or become just another sad love song?

This is a fun romance with a BIG instalove happening. The author also explains that this is a story that fans of hers have begged for as the characters of Gavin and Aly were featured in Until Valerie, by Jessica Marin, part of the Kindle Worlds: Happily Ever Alpha series.

Aly is Valerie's younger sister and is engaged to Gavin in that story. This story explains how they met and fell in love and it was really awesome and sweet and romantic.

Its the story of Gavin, a country western star and Aly who works for a different label and they meet at an event and fall into insta love. However Aly's job and Gavin's ex try to get in the way of their lust/love.

It was a really great story and I loved it. At a point Gavin gets all weird and to me that seemed out of character for him but luckily it gets resolved fairly fast.

Excerpt

A COUPLE OF minutes later, I enter the library double doors. I’ve worked my ass off for every volume lining the walls. There’s something about holding a leather-bound book—the weight, the texture of the page, the subtle hint of coffee and ink. Drake thought I was crazy to invest in paper, but today it’s been proven—every dollar spent is worth its weight in gold.

As I turn the corner of an aisle, Maisie laughs. The sound is low, vibrant, the auditory translation of a simmering sun sliding through the horizon. Sunset in Venice. Monet’s masterpiece brought to life in the color of her voice.

From behind the end cap, I look. Blindsided. That’s what I am when I see her. The curves, the hips, that ass, her face, her ivory skin and those full lips. I forget everything. All of the worries swirling in my mind disappear. I focus on her and it’s a relief. A long hiss of air loosens from my chest and I’m breathless.

She stands on the stepladder, stretching for a book. Her arm reaches higher until the pearly white flesh of her midsection is on display as her sweater rides up. I stare, silent and stupid with incomprehensible words flashing neon in my brain. You. Me. Dinner. Date.

Why? Why does she make me insane?

The tips of her bare toes hardly hold her in place. There’s that laugh again, a short burst as she teeters on the last rung. Her footing slips. Arms whirlwind to find balance or a shelf to grab onto, but instead find nothing but air.

I rush forward. Her back slams into my chest with a breathy “oomph.” Then my hands are on her. Christ. My fingers burn where they curve into her hip. The line of my forearm molds around her stomach, pressing her against me. When her spine stiffens I say, “I’ve got you,” and her head falls to my shoulder. She sighs. She sighs and I hold on tighter.

Seconds. That’s all we have. Maybe five. The subtle hint of peaches and youth, the scent of summer and innocence reaches my nose. I breathe her in for one second, my exhale moving the soft wave of her hair in the next.

“Mr. Kavanagh.”

My ribs constrict around my lungs, squeezing the air out when her hand slides over my arm. Scraping her nails over my skin, her fingers stumble over my watch until finding mine and tangling. The instant ache in my groin shifts my attention from our joined hands to her ass. The same ass that rubs against my zipper. Shit. My dick swells against her backside and a low moan vibrates through her. Goddamn, a moan.

What the hell am I doing? I should leave. The inappropriateness of this situation is not lost on me, but I can’t move. Too intoxicated by her to do anything but squeeze her closer and berate myself for doing so. I’m her boss. She’s . . . Jesus Christ, she’s everything I shouldn’t crave yet I do. For a hundred foolish, selfish reasons, I want this woman.

She may make me insane . . . but I’m not crazy. Not yet anyway. And to keep my sanity intact, I grip her hips and push her forward, forcing some distance between us.

Maisie turns, flattening her shoulders against the bookcase. “Thank you. For saving me.” She clears her throat and waves at the ladder. “Heights are not my thing.”

In another second, her eyes dart from my thighs to the engorged cock in between them and then to my chin. Her gaze flies to the shelves behind me and then up, up to the rows of books. “Such a great library. I wouldn’t have thought . . . Not in a firm this size, not that it’s small. No, God no, it’s not small. Not by a long shot. I can see that. I mean, I know how big. No, that’s not right.” She shakes her head and starts again. “I know how stiff . . . uhm, staff . . .” Her voice trails off when she sucks her bottom lip between her teeth.

A breathless laugh erupts from her mouth. And that fucking smile.

“That was all wrong,” she says, grinning like a loon.

Perfection. She is that—flawless and undeniably beautiful. Real.

I clench my teeth and block the urge to reach for her. Bring her flush with my chest, to feel her soft curves wrap around me.

“Mr. Kavanagh.” Her hand shoots out. “We haven’t officially met. Maisie Walker, newest and best—I assure you—legal assistant in the office. It may not seem that way. The brief—this morning. However, I promise my review is top-notch. All morning I’ve done nothing but think about it. The contract. I’ve worked on you in my mind. Ugh, the research. I’ve worked on the research.”

I stare, dumbfounded, at her perfectly painted pink nails and her long fingers stretched between us. That breathless laugh sounds off again and then she whispers so low I barely hear the words, “I don’t bite. Not too much anyway.”

My gaze jerks and narrows in on her sparkling blue eyes just before our palms connect. Fuck that tremor racing down my spine.

“What did you say?” I step in, hovering over her until she has to crane her neck to stay connected with my eyes. Her hand is gripped in mine. Trapped. Just like I feel when we’re in the same room.

“I mentioned my research.”

“There was something else.”

“No, I was definitely referencing my review. It’s taken all morning and now it brought me to the library. Your very large, well-endowed library. I’ve not encountered one in real life that’s hung in quite this way, only seen them on TV.”

“Hung?”

She bites her lip and the dimple, the one in her right cheek, dips into her porcelain skin and then disappears as she fights a smile.

“Of course I didn’t say hung. That would be a highly inappropriate adjective to describe a library. It’s strung with books, volumes and volumes of big, massive books. Color me impressed, Mr. Kavanagh.”

“Are you able to speak coherently?”

“Absolutely. But you’re standing really, really close to me. And you smell good too. Like cinnamon and leather and big, brutish man. You’re also holding my hand and although I’m not complaining, I have no idea what’s happening right now and I babble when I’m confused. So.”

Almost in spite of itself, the corner of my mouth tips up. “You like my library.”

Maisie nods and uses her free hand to tuck a curl behind her ear, but her eyes never leave mine. “Truly, I do.”

A part of me, the lawyer, wants to tell her how wrong this is, that it verges on a violation of firm policy. Then again, I’m enjoying every word out of her delicious mouth. And as the managing partner, I make the rules.

“Are you flirting with me, Ms. Walker?”

“That depends,” she says in that low breathy voice that gets me hard. “Were you staring at my breasts during the staff meeting, or just appreciating the faux mohair in my sweater?”

This is a brand new author for me and it appears like she is a relatively new author. She did a wonderful job with it. It is an interesting story with some interesting characters and I would love to read more stories in this series.

Also a couple that is mentioned in this story as best friends with the heroine, Maisie are Caden and Piper and their son. You can read that story, Sound of Silence here from Amazon.

That said I almost quit reading this story at 50%. The first part of the book I highly enjoyed. Great characters, great storyline, and just enough drama to make me really enjoy the story, plus lots of side characters I really enjoyed.

But around 50% I sorta started hating the male lead, Jayce and I hated how Maisie, the female lead allowed him to treat her. And because of that I started to disrespect her as well. And had this not been a review, I would have quit right then and there, but I didn't I kept reading and I got angrier at times. Eventually Maisie finally sees how she is being treated and how wrong it is and she finally fights back and things finally change enough for me to enjoy the story.

This is essentially a boss/intern romance. But at times I felt like Jayce was cheating on Maisie and I hate books like that. Now he never actually cheats on her so I want you to understand that but at times he treats her crappy and its because of this other woman. And while its a platonic relationship the things he does or shares with her made me feel like he cheated on Maisie. And it turned my stomache. Now Maisie almost always finds out but that's why I started to hate how she let him treat her.

For instance the first night they sleep together until morning. He runs out on Maisie to go to this other woman and Maisie even hears that he does this and she lets that go. Now he was being a good friend but it was too much. And he never even calls or tries to make it up to her. I would have made things hard for him but Maisie just lets it go and its not okay in my opinion.

The second instance I felt was really awful was when he celebrates  Thanksgiving with his family he brings her along. Now its platonic and they make a big show how she is family and its not a date. But imagine the guy you really like and instead of spending a holiday with him, he is with his family and this other woman. Not okay in my opinion.

There is a 3rd example but finally Maisie gets a clue and so I was so happy she doesn't continue accepting this behavior and finally fights back. The book ends on a great note but mostly its a summary and I would have rather got to experience it rather than being told it more in a fast summary .

That said I did enjoy the other characters in the story and would love to read their stories next.

The Third Best Thing - Fulton U #3 - by Maya Hughes

Blurb

Dear Letter Girl, I need to see you. When can we meet?

Her response never came. My secret pen pal with a dirty mind has ghosted me. I've roped Jules, my sweet as pie next door neighbor, to help me track her down.

There's only one problem—I'm falling for her. The tortoise shell glasses, out of this world curves and delicious treats are making the search for The Letter Girl even harder.

My notes were supposed to be a one time thing. A little too much wine and naughty thoughts on a winter's night. I never thought Berk would write back. I wanted to tell him it was me, but the fear of rejection kept my lips sealed.

Now he’s enlisted my help to track down The Letter Girl and our search has him hot on my, ahem, her trail.

She's the girl next door.

He's my secret pen pal.

Truth is on a collision course with their hearts and it’s only a matter of time before one of them gets wrecked...

A giddy laugh bubbled up from deep down. I snuck a glance at myself in the mirror again. I was a lumpy diva, but, fuck it, I was a badass, too. And I was slowly skidding closer to the ground as the sweat that gathered behind my knee loosened my grip.
Every move I nailed got me a little closer to appreciating how far I’d come. From the first days of slipping off trying to do a basic spin with my feet planted firmly on the floor, to being a diva. This was my freaking body and I loved the shit out of it.
And if I kept telling myself that, maybe one day I’d believe it.
I lowered myself onto my bedroom floor with a flourish, throwing in one more spin for my imaginary audience.
The song ended and I braced my hands on my hips, panting and sweating like I’d run a 5k, with a grin so damn wide I felt it in my toes. Jumping up and down, I gave myself a high five and a few club-worthy woos. It made it harder to figure out if I was doing the tricks one hundred percent correctly, but I sure as hell wasn’t going to record myself to watch later or head to a pole dancing studio with full-wall mirrors. I wasn’t at that level of okay with me in all my glory—yet.
I flopped onto my bed and stared up at the ceiling. My hip-hugging short shorts and sports bra gave me little coverage, but pole dancing wasn’t exactly about modesty. I’d given it a try at the urging of my therapist during freshman year and hell if it hadn’t helped—some. It was a way for me to build strength, body confidence, and maybe attempt to feel a little sexy.
The door slammed downstairs and I shot up from the bed.
“Jules!” Berk’s unmistakable call sent me from pole dancing heart racing to ‘floor it, Louise,’ careening toward a cliff. I shot up and fell off my bed, rattling the perfume bottles on my dresser. Scrambling off the floor, I grabbed my sweatpants and tugged them on, hopping from foot to foot and sounding like I’d taken up bowling in my bedroom. I snagged my glasses off my desk and shoved them onto my face.
Berk was probably wondering how I’d trapped a wild animal up in my room. I grabbed my long sleeved T-shirt and hoodie off the back of my chair even though it was August. The fabric clung to my sweaty skin and I probably had a sweat-stashe going on, but that was better than him walking up here and finding me half naked. A panic spiral shot through me and I got dressed even quicker and threw open my door.
My feet barely touched any of the steps as I flew downstairs.
“Berk.” I fell into the kitchen, bracing my arm against the doorway. The butterflies in my stomach were replaced by a whole freaking safari. I tightened my lips to what I hoped was a non-serial killer level of smile. My heart was glowing like a spotlight, so I wrapped my arms tighter around myself. Tingles tiptoed up and down my spine at the sight of his floppy hair and jeans that hugged his ass and trim waist better than mine ever fit me.
His head shot up and the half of the cookie sticking out of his mouth broke off and dropped onto the counter. “There you are.” His words were muffled behind two manhole cover-sized cookies.
“Did you think I was hiding in my cookie box?”
“Is that what you’re calling it these days?” Killer smile and a direct hit. “The old cookie box.”

This is book 3 in the series and a highly anticipated story. It stars Julia/Jules and Berk who are neighbors and share friends who are romantically involved with each other. It was really different than I imagined it would be, but it still was a really fun and wonderful story.

In past books we have gotten to know both characters and we know that Berk and Jules have a secret admirer type of relationship and one where Berk is crushing on a secret letter writer but has no clue its Jules.

Jules has a HUGE crush on him but she thinks he only likes her for her baked goods and not who she is inside and so she never plans to share that she was the letter writer. The two have formed a friendship and Jules is okay with that, until Berk starts to see her differently.

There are two main issues in this romance that threaten Berk and Jules romance and one is Alexis, an evil 20 something year old who is close to Berk. And the second is the secret admirer relationship and Jules scared to tell Berk.

The biggest surprise in this story for me was who Berk was. In previous books he comes across as a very HOT and confident guy and the reality is very different. Sorry no spoilers here, you will have to read the story to get to know the real Berk.

This story is very centered on how different we are underneath all our BS and how we have to let our walls down to let our friends and romantic partners in to see who we really are. It was an amazing story and I absolutely loved every second of the story, it just was different than I had expected.

He jerks his thumb at his mansion. “Don’t you want a tour?” “Of Hearst Castle? No, thanks.” His expression tells me how incomprehensible that is. “Everyone always wants a tour. Always.” “I mean, it’s a very nice place, I’m sure.” Now he looks insulted. He turns to stare at the house, then turns back to me. “Nice?” “Please don’t take it personally. I’m not trying to start World War III here. A house like that just isn’t my thing.” “Your thing?” “Will you stop repeating everything I say?” “It’s just that I’m having trouble with the fact that you don’t like my house. Everybody likes it. Everybody. Especially women.” I sign in exasperation. “Oh, for goodness’ sake, Mason, I could give a flying fig what everyone else thinks. I’ll take my cozy little cottage over this place any day.” But why?” I fold my arms across my chest and turn my torso toward him. “Why are you so upset that I don’t like it when you don’t like it, either?” He shouts, “I never said I didn’t like it!” “You didn’t have to. The closer we got to it, the more you constipated you looked.” “That’s just my face!” “Baloney. You hate your house. Admit it.” Wild-eyed and wound up, he stares at me for a long, silent moment. Then he exhales in a huge gust and drops his head into his hands. He says miserably, “I totally hate it. It’s awful, isn’t it?” I pat his shoulder. “It’s beautiful, elegant, and absolutely ridiculous. Have you thought about asking the state legislature if they need new headquarters?” He moans into his hands. “I don’t even have any furniture except a bed. You should hear how bad it echoes in there. And everything is marble, so it’s always freezing cold. Sometimes I wake up in the middle of the night and think I’m sleeping in a mausoleum!” I can’t help myself. I start laughing again. He lifts his head and glares at me. “It’s not funny!” “It’s so funny I can’t stand it.” “Do you have any idea what I paid for this place?” “Your gargantuan mausoleum?” I squint at it through the window. “I dunno. Bazillions?” “Exactly! Bazillions!” “I’m no financial whiz, Sparky, but I think they saw you coming.” When he groans and drops his head against the headrest, closing his eyes, I try to reassure him. “I’m sure there’s some oil baron with twelve ex-wives and a hundred kids who’d love to move into it. With all the members of his country club. And their housekeeping staff.” Mason opens his eyes and glares at me. I try to stifle another laugh, but fail. “And the entire population of Portugal.” “Ha ha.” “Oh, lighten up. It’s not like you can’t sell it.” Sounding panicked, he says, “But where would I live?” “You say that like there are zero options between here and a cardboard box.” “Name one.” “There’s a house for sale at the end of my block.” That astonishes him so much it leaves him speechless. “You’re right,” I say solemnly. “It’s only a three-bedroom. There’s not enough space for both you and your ego.” He looks away. “I’m just surprised you’d want me living on the same street as you.” “Are you kidding? Imagine how much fun we could have screaming obscenities at each other over the backyard fences. The neighbors would love it.” When he glances back at me and sees me smiling, he smiles, too. “Yeah, especially when they hear your PG version of cursing. ‘Dingwaddle’ this and ‘flying fig’ that. They won’t even know what language we’re speaking.” We smile at each other so long it starts to get uncomfortable. I look away, patting my hair to make sure no stray strands have escaped from my bun. After a rough throat clearing, Mason says, “I guess I’ll go in, then.” “Okay. Goodnight. And thanks again for dinner. I love that place.” When he doesn’t respond, I glance over at him. He’s staring back at me with the same warm look that flustered me at the restaurant. “You’re welcome, Pink. Anytime.” “So I’ll send you all the information on Stephanie as soon as I vet her file. Okay?” “Sure. Looking forward to it.” An awkward silence follows. Finally, Mason breaks it by saying, “Sweet dreams.” He opens the door and starts to get out. “Wait.” He turns to me, his hand on the door and a question in his eyes. “I, um, I need to say something.” He groans. “You’re killing me, you know that?” “No, this isn’t anything about you. You haven’t done anything wrong. This is about me.” Eyes alight, he settles back into his seat. “This should be interesting.” I search his face before I speak, because I want to be sure I don’t miss any change in his expression. “I’m sorry for teasing you about your ego. It’s not nice. And I don’t want you to think that I think there’s anything wrong with you, because I don’t.” His face goes through several different emotions before it settles on something I can’t identify. It’s part pain and part pleasure, with a whole lot of ambivalence thrown in. He says softly, “I know you don’t think there’s anything wrong with me. Which is what makes me assume your parents must’ve dropped you on your head a lot when you were a baby.” “Oh, for crying out loud. I’m trying to apologize here!” He grins. “You did. I heard you. And you don’t have to do it again, because I like it when you give me shit.” When I quirk my lips, he amends quickly, “The business. I meant I like it when you give me the business. Nobody else mouths off to me the way you do.” “Good to know,” I say, smiling. “Now that I know you like it, the gloves will come off, pal, so you better watch out.” “I can hardly wait.” We sit there grinning at each other, until Mason says, “Get outta here. I’ll talk to you next week.” “Aye-aye, Captain.” Then it all falls apart in slow motion. I don’t know what makes me do it. I honestly don’t. One minute we’re smiling and saying goodbye, the next minute I’m impulsively leaning over to give him a kiss on the cheek. Only he’s turning his head, so my target moves. Where his cheek was supposed to be, suddenly his lips are there instead. His warm, soft, beautiful lips, which part when they meet mine.

This is my first read by this author but wow I am impressed. This is a fun, romantic and amusing romance between two very opposite people.

Maddie runs a romance finer/matchmaking business and she is all about love. She is hired by Mason's agent to find him some dates and a fiancรฉe. He is her total opposite. He has a dark past and does not believe in love at all. And so Maddie is given this impossible task of finding him a fiancรฉe but he is opposed to love.

However Maddie charms and challenges him and her aunt and his agent enjoy watching these two spar and not fall for the other. In the mix we have Maddie's evil ex who stirs the pot and this story really reminded me a lot of a modern Beauty and the Beast.

Note that this story is told in the POV of all 4 major characters and it was absolutely perfect. I absolutely loved all the characters except for the evil ex and only hated that it ends because it was so much fun and I loved Maddie and Mason.
