Addicted 2 Romance Review:

**I voluntarily reviewed an Advance Reader Copy of this book.**

First off I feel I should confess that I am part of the Melanie Shawn pre-release review team. I found Melanie when I fell in love with her Hope Falls series which I beyond love. This is her Crossroads series and I have read a book here or there but not the entire series, especially the early books. This book really brings the two series together, more so than I have seen in her other books. While I was constantly looking up various books in the series as characters were mentioned, I was not lost and I feel that this book can easily stand alone. However, be warned you might have to read the other books because you learn alot about previous characters in this book and they sound like wonderful love stories.

This is book 11 and it starts right after book 10 ends where Ace and Stephanie end up in love and engaged. Steph and Ace are friends of the hero, Dex and Ace and Dex work together for a security company and  also own a nightclub. On opening night of the club in book 10, we meet the heroine, Ginny who is a big country music star and who sang that night. Then around Valentine's Day, Ace brought Ginny back to sing to Stephanie. Dex on meeting Ginny at the opening had a major crush on Ginny but in this book we learn he and Ginny spent Valentine's night with each other but in a just friends way. However since that night both have not stopped thinking about the other. And thats where this book opens, with Dex in lust with Ginny and Ginny showing up at Dex's door with her suitcases as she is in town now to work on a new album with Chase Sloan, a fellow musician in town.

Chase Sloan is related to the Sloan family and his many brothers and their wives and families are involved in this story as Ginny is not only working on her new album but she also is planning on interiviewing happy couples in love and thats how we get to see all the various love stories of this series as she meets and interviews the couples for this feature. In addition she writes a song that Chase thinks would be perfect with some music Karina Halle owns. And thats how the author melds her two series together because Karina is from Hope Falls and we get to catch up with her and Ryan as she comes and visits with Ginny. I totally LOVED seeing them again and really getting to know more of the characters and their stories in this series.

Beyond ,music Ginny has a sad life story, she never knew her father because he died when she was a baby. But she thinks she found a picture of him on Facebook and it leads to Chase's family and so she is trying to get to know the Sloan family. This was a really fun and terrific part of the story and I am not spoiling what she finds out.

Ginny and Dex, those two are so sweet and cute together. They have a lot of stuff to work though, one of which is Dex gets hired as her bodyguard. They also have family come visit and I loved the scenes with Dex's mom and sister.

Meanwhile along the way Dex and Ginny have to decide if they want to be together and this book was seriously fun and hot as the two try and figure out what they want from the other. Dex is a wonderful character and I totally loved Ginny.

Addicted2 Romance Review:

** I voluntarily reviewed an Advance Reader Copy of this book.**

This book is #2 in the series about Bad boys and this is Dylan's story. He is the brother that owns a bar but also they guy that likes submissive, and needy women. In this story he falls for tough as nails, sports agent Tiffany Winters and learns more about who he is.

Note to the author: Please write about the Winters Brother I LOVED!!! I can totally see a Winters Boys Series.

Back to the review...Tiffany looks and even at first acts like Mrs Tough Nails but inside she is a big ball of marshmellow. The thing is her mom left her when she was very young, she had a cheating ex and cheating best friend so she doesn't really want to be soft and get hurt. She is a 24/7 workaholic but loves her job so much.

But well Dylan Bad, he never goes away. He is mr persistent and he thinks Tiffany is very special and he seduces her by letting her be mrs. tough cookie outside the bedroom but inside he is in charge. I really loved how romantic he is with Tiffany. They live in the same building, which made it very easy for him to hang out an give her gifts without going stalkerish.

The two of them are very cute together and I really enjoyed Dylan enjoying the strong woman Tiffany is but taking charge in the bedroom. This is a really fun read and I really enjoyed getting to know Dylan and Tiffany and watching them fall hard for the other. I also really enjoyed the role reversal of Dylan chasing Tiffany and falling first, while she was the workaholic with no time for romance.

The two really get each other and I loved how cute they are together and how their families and friends mesh together. There are tons of HOT scenes and I always love that. But I really adored watching these two grow and change as they make the concious decision to form a life together.

I loved the benefit they put on for Dylan's sister and how involved all the current characters, future characters and characters form other books were in this part of the story. This is a story about finding love, family and about balance. Learning to balance work, love and relationships.

My favorite scene in the book was the naked street painting. It was sexy, hot and so original. I really loved this story, its definitely one of my favorites. It does stand alone though but if you read the other books you will know more about some of the other characters featured in this book.

Her Brains

The man she seeks is a mathematician; the man she unwittingly finds is Lord Fox: dynamic, athletic, and as bored by the equations Claire adores as she is by the social whirl upon which he thrives. Plus His Brawn

Fox’s male pride has been bruised ever since his fiancรฉe jilted him. One way to recover: win a bet that he can transform Lady Claire, Society’s roughest diamond, into its most prized jewel. But Claire has other ideas—shockingly steamy ones. . .

Equals A Study In Seduction
By Claire’s calculations, Fox is the perfect man to satisfy her sensual curiosity. In Fox’s estimation, Claire is the perfect woman to prove his mastery of the ton. But the one thing neither of them counted on is love . . .

Addicted2Romance Review:

**I voluntarily reviewed an Advance Reader Copy of this book.**

No automatic alt text available.

I started reading this story and then realised it was a series, which I had book 1 about sister Bridget in my To Be Read pile. So I decided to read that first. I am happy I did because Fox, the hero in this book is featured a lot in that first story, "Lady Bridget's Diary," as is his sister Franny.

After that story I started reading this book again, when the Duke of Ashbrooke was introduced, but it sounded very familiar. So I looked it up and I had read it a few years go in "The Wicked Wallflower," which is part of the Wallflower series and features Emma and the Duke who are also important in this story.

So while this book does stand alone I highly suggest you read those two stories first. If you choose not to, you will still enjoy this story but you might wonder about those stories. Another fact about this story is that all 3 sisters stories in this series run concurrently through a majority of the book, so you will not miss too much if you pick this book up without reading the others in the series..

Now onto this review, this book stars Lord Fox who is a Marquis. He has a sister Fransceca/Franny and she is said to have the beauty and the brains in the family while Fox has the brawn. So he does not believe he is smart, he is the jock, the guy interested in sports and fencing and boxing but not super smart. Though he has one weakness and that is he wants to win whether its a horse race or a woman or a bet amonst friends.

Unfortunately he is also a heartbroken lord when this book begins. His almost fiancee ran off with a no good actor and so Fox is feeling not so great about himself. Trying to show his friends he is not heart broken he says that all females are the same and that is how he gets challenged by his friend to date and bring the american sister of a Duke up to societies standards. The friends decide that Claire, is the one who is all that!

Claire is the oldest sister and she always has her head into a book. She loves math and she can't wait to attend lectures and meet and chat with Ashbrooke. She only notices Fox at all because he introduces her to Ashbrooke and his new wife.

This is a story of opposites attracting think the jock vs the mathematician and Claire really thinks she wants someone like her until well she meets someone like her. As to Fox, well he just wants her, anyway he can get her which made for a sweet story. He also wants to win the bet but he has no idea how.

This book was really wonderul and I really enjoyed Fox and Claire.

London, 1824
Lord and Lady Chesham’s ballroom
It was a truth universally acknowledged that Maximilian Frederick DeVere, Lord Fox, was God’s gift to the ladies of London. He was taller and brawnier than his peers and in possession of the sort of chiseled good looks—above and below the neck—that were more often found in works of classical art. By all accounts he was charming and universally liked by men and women alike, though for different reasons, of course. He won at two things, always: women and sport.
Fox strolled through the ballroom as if he owned the place. He nodded at friends and acquaintances—Carlyle, with whom he occasionally fenced, Fitzwalter, who he had soundly thrashed at boxing last week, and Willoughby, who was always game for a curricle race.
Fox flashed his famous grin as he heard the ladies’ usual comments when he strolled past.
“I think he just smiled at me.”
“I think I’m going to swoon.”
“God, Arabella Vaughn is one lucky woman.”
“Was,” someone corrected. “Didn’t you see the report in The London Weekly this morning?”
Fox’s grin faltered.
That was when Mr. Rupert Wright and Lord Mowbray found him. Their friendship stretched all the way back to their early days at Eton.
“We heard the news, Fox,” Rupert said grimly, clapping a hand on his shoulder.
“I daresay everyone has heard the news,” Fox replied dryly.
It didn’t escape his notice that the guests nearby had fallen silent. It was the first time he’d appeared in public since the news broke in the paper this morning, though Arabella had so kindly left him a note the day prior. Everyone was watching him to see how he would react, what he would say, if he would cry.
“Who would have thought we’d see this day?” Mowbray mused. “Miss Arabella Vaughn, darling of the haute ton, running off with an actor.”
“That alone would be scandalous,” Rupert said, adding, “Never mind that she has ditched Fox. Who is, apparently, considered a catch. What with his lofty title, wealth, and not hideous face.”
Fox’s Male Pride bristled. It’d been bristling and seething and enraged ever since the news broke that his beautiful, popular betrothed had left him to elope with some plebian actor.
Not just any actor, either, but Lucien Kemble. Yes, he was the current sensation among the haute ton, lighting up the stage each night in his role as Romeo in Romeo and Juliet. Covent Garden theater was sold out for the rest of the season. The gossip columns loved him, given his flair for dramatics both onstage and off—everything from tantrums to torrid love affairs to fits over his artistry. Women adored him; they may have sighed and swooned over Lucien Kemble as much as Fox.
To lose a woman to any other man was insupportable—and, until recently, not something that ever happened to him—but to lose her to someone who made his living prancing around onstage in tights? It was intolerable.
“Just who does she think she is?” Fox wondered aloud.
“She’s Arabella Vaughn. Beautiful. Popular. Enviable. Every young lady here aspires to be her. Every man here would like a shot with her,” Mowbray answered.
“She’s you, but in petticoats,” Rupert said, laughing.
It was true. He and Arabella were perfect together.
Like most men, he’d fallen for her at first sight after catching a glimpse of her across a crowded ballroom. She was beautiful in every possible way: a tall, lithe figure with full breasts; a mouth made for kissing and other things that gentlemen didn’t mention in polite company; blue eyes fringed in dark lashes; honey gold hair that fell in waves; a complexion that begged comparisons to cream and milk and moonlight.
Fox had taken one look at her and thought: mine.
They were a perfect match in beauty, wealth, social standing, all that. They both enjoyed taking the ton by storm. He remembered the pride he felt as they strolled through a ballroom arm in arm and the feeling of everyone’s eyes on them as they waltzed so elegantly.
They were great together.
They belonged together.
Fox also remembered the more private moments—so many stolen kisses, the intimacy of gently pushing aside a wayward strand of her golden hair, promises for their future as man and wife. They would have perfect children, and entertain the best of society, and generally live a life of wealth and pleasure and perfection, together.
Fox remembered his heart racing—nerves!—when he proposed because this beautiful girl he adored was going to be his.
And then she had eloped. With an actor.

It burned, that. Ever since he’d heard the news, Fox had stormed around in high dudgeon. He was not accustomed to losing.
“Take away her flattering gowns and face paint and she’s just like any other woman here,” Fox said, wanting it to be true so he wouldn’t feel the loss so keenly. “Look at her, for example.”
Rupert and Mowbray both glanced at the woman he pointed out—a short, frumpy young lady nervously sipping lemonade. She spilled some down the front of her bodice when she caught three men staring at her.
“If one were to offer her guidance on supportive undergarments and current fashions and get a maid to properly style her coiffure, why, she could be the reigning queen of the haute ton,” Fox pointed out.
Both men stared at him, slack jawed.
“You’ve never been known for being the sharpest tool in the shed, Fox, but now I think you’re really cracked,” Mowbray said. “You cannot just give a girl a new dress and make her popular.”
“Well, Mowbray, maybe you couldn’t. But I could.”
“Gentlemen . . .” Rupert cut in. “I don’t care for the direction of this conversation.”
“You honestly think you can do it,” Mowbray said, awed.
He turned to face Mowbray and drew himself up to his full height, something he did when he wanted to be imposing. His Male Pride had been wounded and his competitive spirit—always used to winning—was spoiling for an opportunity to triumph.
“I know I can,” Fox said with the confidence of a man who won pretty much everything he put his mind to—as long as it involved sport, or women. Arabella had been his first, his only, loss. A fluke, surely.
“Well, that calls for a wager,” Mowbray said.
The two gentlemen stood eye to eye, the tension thick. Rupert groaned.
“Name your terms,” Fox said.
“I pick the girl.”
“Fine.”
“This is a terrible idea,” Rupert said. He was probably right, but he was definitely ignored.
“Let me see . . . who shall I pick?” Mowbray made a dramatic show of looking around the ballroom at all the ladies nearby. There were at least a dozen of varying degrees of pretty and pretty hopeless.
Then Mowbray’s attentions fixed on one particular woman. Fox followed his gaze, and when he saw who his friend had in mind, his stomach dropped.
“No.”
“Yes,” Mowbray said, a cocky grin stretching across his features.
“Unfortunately dressed I can handle. Shy, stuttering English miss who at least knows the rules of society? Sure. But one of the Americans?”
Fox let the question hang there. The Cavendish family had A Reputation the minute the news broke that the new Duke of Durham was none other than a lowly horse trainer from the former colonies. He and his sisters were scandalous before they even set foot in London. Since their debut in society, they hadn’t exactly managed to win over the haute ton, either, to put it politely.
“Now, they’re not all bad,” Rupert said. “I quite like Lady Bridget . . .”
But Fox was still in shock and Mowbray was enjoying it too much to pay any mind to Rupert’s defense of the Americans.
“The bluestocking?”
That was the thing: Mowbray hadn’t picked just any American, but the one who already had a reputation for being insufferably intelligent, without style or charm to make herself more appealing to the gentlemen of the ton. She was known to bore a gentleman to tears by discussing not the weather, or hair ribbons, or gossip of mutual acquaintances, but math.
Lady Claire Cavendish seemed destined to be a hopeless spinster and social pariah.
Even the legendary Duchess of Durham, aunt to the new duke and his sisters, hadn’t yet been able to successfully launch them into society and she’d already had weeks to prepare them! It seemed insane that Fox should succeed where the duchess failed.
But Fox and his Male Pride had never, not once, backed away from a challenge, especially not when the stakes had never been higher. He knew two truths about himself: he won at women and he won at sport.
He was a winner.
And he was not in the mood for soul searching or crafting a new identity when the old one suited him quite well. Given this nonsense with Arabella, he had to redeem himself in the eyes of the ton, not to mention his own. It was an impossible task, but one that Fox would simply have to win.

“Her family is hosting a ball in a fortnight,” Mowbray said. “I expect you to be there—with Lady Claire on your arm as the most desirable and popular woman in London.”

Q&A WITH MAYA RODALE

How did you come up with the concept and the characters for the story?

All the novels in my Keeping Up With The Cavendishes series are inspired by my favorite romantic comedies.  Lady Claire Is All That is based on the 90’s rom com She’s All That. Basically, I write stories that I want to read—funny, witty, happy ever afters—and I delight in seeing mash ups of modern times and pop culture with historical romance.

What gave you the most trouble with this story?

The heroine of Lady Claire Is All That is a math genius and I am...not. At all. There isn’t much math in the novel (phew!) but what does appear is thanks to one of my dearest romance writing friends Caroline Linden, who happens to have a math degree from Harvard.

A la Twitter style, please describe your book in 140 characters or less.

In Lady Claire Is All That sparks fly between a brainy heroine and the hot jock of the haute ton in this Regency remake of the rom com She’s All That!

What types of scenes are your most favorite to write?

I love writing the funny, teasing, loving banter between the four siblings in my Keeping Up With The Cavendishes series. Writing some good flirtation between the hero and heroine is also a favorite of mine.

How long have you been writing, and what (or who) inspired you to start?

I’ve been writing romance novels for about twelve years now (though I’ve been writing for longer than that). Then, and now, I write the book that I’m in the mood to read because I’m still a reader first!

 About the Author:

Maya Rodale began reading romance novels in college at her mother’s insistence and it wasn’t long before she was writing her own. Maya is now the author of multiple Regency historical romances. She lives in New York City with her darling dog and a rogue of her own.

Addicted 2 Romance Review:

I voluntarily reviewed an Advance Reader Copy of this book.

The two main characters is this story are:

Brandy Love: age 44, ten years younger, single moms of two kids, owns a gym and is a driven career woman with no time for romance or dating even though she has been divorced from her jerk of an ex for 4 years.

Rick Morehouse: 30ish, forner football player am now a high school coach, raised by a single mom, and never dates single moms.

After a steamy encounter in a shower and the TRX room at Brandy's gym, the two unconciously start a relationship of hookups and it was so fun to watch both characters refuse to date but fall hard for the other.

This books is STEAMY! Lost of super hot sex scenes but Rick is a big, sexy teddy bear with the heart of gold and falls fast for Brandy and her kids while saying I can't date a single mom. There is some drama in this book where Brandy's ex helps out and I enjoyed how Brandy saves Rick.

This was a fun holiday read as the book also features Rick being a Santa for a foster children's event as it takes place around Christmas time. Santa even gets a little something extra. I loved the stories message of forgiveness and trust.

I found this book well written, steamy, loved the characters and a fast read. The only thing I didn't like about the story was that 85% of the story are hookups and running into each other and not dating and forming a romantic relationship. For most of the story both characters are anti-dating and dating is one reasons I like romance books.

EXCERPT:

Damn, she bet no woman had ever told him no in his life.
She’d have to be the first. Folding her arms across her chest, partly to keep him from seeing her erect nipples, she held firm. “I’m sorry. I’m happy to have you both here, but not until the proper documentation is in place.”
He smirked, like he thought she was full of shit. Or was it because he knew her nipples were hard?
Damn, was she blushing?
The youth looked at her with an innocent, easygoing appeal.
Was she really capable of throwing them out?
“I’ll bet you’re pretty confident you can sweet talk your way into anything, aren’t you?”
The corners of his mouth twitched. “Is this about money, because I’m happy to pay for both our memberships. It’s just that we only need it for a few weeks and I thought you were interested in supporting the community—”
“I am interested in supporting the community.” Her voice had gone up a notch. How did she end up being the bitch here?  “And no, it’s not about the money. It’s just about having the proper liability forms signed by all the parties.”
Rick stepped closer, rather than drawing away. They probably taught him that in Flirting 101. “I’ll tell you what,” he said, flashing that heart-stopping smile at her. His voice was deep and resonant and seemed to go right into her body, activating every cell. “I’ll fill mine out right now, and I’ll have Donnie’s mom sign his tonight so that next time we are set up properly.”
She put her hands on her hips. “Somehow I don’t think you’re taking this—me,” she spluttered. “As seriously as you should.”
Obviously she was right because his smile only increased. He cocked a brow. “How serious do you want to take this?”
Her tummy fluttered at the innuendo. Her brain stomped its foot. “Rick Morehouse, that flirty act might work with Houston Socialites, but it’s not going to work with me.”
His lips twitched. “I wasn’t flirting. I’m just being friendly.”
Half of her wanted to kick him in the shin, the other half considered jumping the sexy man. It was hard enough to run a business as a female entrepreneur in a good ‘ol boys state without having Coach Handsome throwing her off her game.
A fire burned in his green eyes, lighting her from head to toe. As if he had some mesmerizing power, she realized she really didn’t want to tell him no. Her shoulders dropped in defeat. “Fine.” She really hoped nobody got hurt today or it would be her ass on the line.
His smile widened. He had sensual lips, and she imagined he must be the most expert kisser in all of Texas. He’d probably already done toothpaste commercials. She should find time to watch more TV.
“But I will need that liability waiver from his mom here by tomorrow—and yours right now.”
“Yes, ma’am.”
She wanted to wipe that smirk right off his face. Why didn’t he take her seriously?
She whirled around, her ponytail flipping in their direction as she stalked off. And ran right into the leg press machine.
“Ow.” Damn, her shin. That would be a bruise.
“You okay?”
Shut up, Coach Perfect.
“Fine.” She rubbed it, hopping on one foot and trying to walk away at the same time. “You just worry about yourself over there.”
She heard the deep rumble of laughter following her out of the room.

Addicted2Romance Review:

**I voluntarily reviewed an Advance Reader Copy of this book.**

I fell in love with the first book in the series, Sway, which features Landry brother Bennett and Ali, both who were in this book as well. In that book we met Bennett's youngest brother, Lincoln, a very popular baseball player.

This is his book and it begins when he gets injured playing ball and has to do therapy at the hospital.  While on the elevator one day, it opens and he sees Dani, who runs a program at the hospital for scik kids. He falls in instant lust. But Dani tries to resist him.

Why? well Dani believes Baseball players are not for her. Her father is a famous sports star and her mom a former actress and she hates them because they just insult and her hurt her and so she lives very far from them and tries to stay away from anything to do with sports and especially sports stars.

However, Lincoln does not stop. I loved the title of the book because he just keeps swinging for Dani's heart and whether he hits a home run or not he sees how precious she is. In the beginning of the book, I felt myself stop and start alot because Dani is very resistant, anything that Lincoln does she resists and I did not love how he gives his all and she gives nothing back even though she likes him.

But once she stops resisting, OMG thats when this book takes off. I also LOVED all the wonderful scenes with Graham, Bennett and even Huxley. The Landry's are why I read this book series and they make magic every time they are on scene.

The next book features Graham and I for one cannot wait.

EXCERPT:

Why they call it a farmhouse is beyond me. That word paints an image of a little white house with a chicken coop. This is a Southern plantation. A huge, wide porch with pillars looks to encompass the entire place. Mums line whiskey barrels and give the clean exterior pops of burgundy, orange, and yellow.

It’s breathtaking. “This is gorgeous,” I breathe as it comes into full view. “Not what I expected.” “This is my second favorite place in the world,” he whispers against my ear. “Second? What could be more perfect that this?” “Inside you.” Before he can pull away, I turn my face so my lips capture his. He deepens the kiss, our lips working against one another in perfect harmony.

As we pull away, breathless, he grins. “Thank you for coming.” “I’ll ensure you come later,” I promise. “Naughty girl,” he chuckles as the car rolls to a stop. “I like it.” “You will.”

Devon McMillon wasn't looking for a knight in shining armor. She didn't need a man to rescue her or take care of her. She just wanted someone who would treat her as an equal and love her for who she was.

Unfortunately, even in a city as big as Manhattan, finding a guy who wasn't intimidated by a strong-minded, slightly outspoken woman was proving harder than expected. Having fallen in love at the age of fifteen Collin Locklaine was convinced he'd already found the woman he was destined to spend the rest of his life with.

That was, until she pulled the rug out from under him and ended their relationship. He'd taken care of her, been her protector. And now he was forced to start over again. A man with a hero complex and a woman with a fierce independent streak should never work. However, fate has other ideas. Besides, sex that good can't be a fluke, right?

With an attraction like theirs, Devon and Collin have no other choice but to dive in and see where it leads them. Only one thing is certain. When they finally come together, it's going to be epic.

Addicted 2 Romance Review:

Image may contain: one or more people and people dancing

***I voluntarily reviewed an Advance Reader Copy of this book.**

I have read this entire series and I am so sad to report that this is the end of the Locklaine boys. Its been an amazingly wonderful series and this book is definitely one of my favorites. Mostly because I love the heroine, Devon.

Image may contain: one or more people and text

Devon is spunky, she says it like it is and takes no prisoners and in this book she works for Richard Locklaine who is living with and in love with her bestie, Delilah and they live next door. They have lots of sex and Richard's cousin, Collin is Devon's roomie. He also shares a wall with the other apartment and so when they have sex he runs to Devons be and they snuggle.

Sounds great right? So whats the problem? It is that Collin is a 34 year old man who has dated his ex since he was 15. So even though, the ex, Briane turned his marriage proposal down, he still calls and texts her, and Devon refuses to get involved with a guy hung up on someone else.

However, well meaning friends (who I love from the other books) decide to hook Devon up with other guys, namely,Chance (yes he is back too, I hope he gets a book someday) and well thats when Collin gets a clue and OMG the fireworks.

Thats all I telling you about the plot. Does Devon and Collin get a clue? Does Briane win or does Devon get her man? Well this story is pure fun and I loved the journey to happiness and love for Devon and Collin.

“Shh,” I hissed. “You have to be quiet. Collin can’t know you’re here. I didn’t tell him, and he might get pissed and kick you out.”
The small, pathetic whimper tugged at my heart, and I reached down to pick the squirming bundle of fur off my bedroom floor, tucking her close to my chest. “It’s okay,” I cooed to the puppy. “I’ll talk him around. Don’t worry.”
It probably would have been smart to discuss adopting a puppy with my roommate before I actually went to the SPCA and got him, but obviously, I wasn’t making the best decisions as of late. I still hadn’t been one hundred percent decided when I stopped by the shelter, but when I walked past her cage and saw her sad, lonely eyes staring up at me, I just couldn’t help myself. She looked how I felt. It was fate. I knew she was destined to be my puppy, so I didn’t hesitate. I adopted her right then. I just hoped Collin didn’t completely lose his shit when he finally discovered my little secret.
She whimpered again and stretched her neck out to lick the underside of my jaw. “You hungry, baby girl?” I giggled when her little puppy teeth started nipping at my chin. I placed her on the floor and pulled out the doggie bowl I’d just purchased — along with a shit ton of other puppy items — and dumped in a scoop of dog food. Picking up the matching water bowl, I stood and headed for the bedroom door. “Now you be quiet, okay? I need to go get you some water. I’ll be right back.”
I left the bedroom thinking that having a conversation with a dog like it was an actual person might mean I needed to get a life. I’d just filled the bowl full of water when the front door flew open so fast it crashed into the wall behind it, causing me to jump and slosh the contents of the bowl all down the front of my silk blouse.
A second later it slammed shut, followed by a loud, “Devon!”
“Jeez, will you relax,” I muttered, yanking a wad of paper towels off the holder to try and soak up some of the water that was falling down my front. “I’m right here.”
My eyes had been pointed down at my drenched top, so focused on my task that I hadn’t caught the fiery, determined expression on Collin’s face as he continued toward the kitchen until he was right on me. I let out a startled gasp when his hand suddenly shot into my line of sight, snatching the paper towels out of my grip.
“What the hell?” I blinked and looked up to find his face only inches from mine. My heart rate spiked at the close proximity. My skin began to tingle, and I stumbled back on my heels to try and create some distance. “What’s going on? What’s wrong?”
With every step I took back, he followed until I was pinned against the kitchen counter. Collin’s hands bracketed my hips, giving me no room for escape. His voice was gruff and rumbly as he declared, “This shit ends.” Then dipped his face so we were nose to nose and growled, “Today.”
The sudden burning sensation in my lungs alerted me to the fact that I’d been holding my breath. Pulling in some much-needed oxygen, I stuttered, “W-what?”
Collin ran the tip of his nose along mine and the sensation made my entire body melt. My knees threatened to buckle and my head went loopy. “Uh… w-what are y-you doing?”
“I’m sick and fucking tired of you freezing me out.”
Okay, well, those words were enough to chase the warm, gooey feeling in my belly away. I put my hands to his chest and pushed, but it was like trying to move a wall. “Collin—” I spoke in a low, warning tone.
Unfortunately, he didn’t care that I wanted him to step back. He wasn’t finished. And what he said next was a massive hit to that steel-reinforced wall I’d been working to build around myself. “I miss touching you.”
Well damn.
At the feel of his lips sliding along my cheek, my eyes fluttered closed. “I miss holding you whenever the hell I want,” he whispered against the shell of my ear, causing me to tremble. “You’ve been giving me the silent treatment for too goddamned long.”
“C-Collin…” That time I spoke his name in a completely different tone. Needy, pleading, almost desperate. “I don’t… what’s happening right now?”
I could have sworn his tongue darted out and flicked my earlobe. “What’s it feel like?”
“I—”
Then the moment was broken by a sharp, yappy bark that was coming from my bedroom.
“Oh shit.”
Collin’s entire body jerked back. “The fuck was that?”
“Uh… Collin. It’s—”
Before I could get the words out, he was on the move, rounding the counter that separated the kitchen and living space, and heading down the hall toward my room. “Collin, wait,” I panted, chasing after him. “I can totally explain!”
He had the door thrown open as I hit the mouth of the hall, and I knew, by his reaction, he’d found the source of the noise when I was about two feet away.
“Holy fuck!” He stumbled back and hit the wall. “Jesus Christ! What the hell is that?!” he shouted, still moving backward along the wall. His terror-filled eyes were on my poor puppy as she trotted out and followed after him. “Shit! It’s moving! Devon, get me a broom or baseball bat or something to kill it with!”
“No!” I rushed down the rest of the hall and skirted past Collin, scooping my precious baby off the floor and holding her close. “Don’t you dare!”
“Jesus, Devon, don’t touch that thing! It could have rabies or something.”
My eyes narrowed in a vicious glare. “She doesn’t have rabies. And she’s not a thing. She’s a puppy.” I cuddled her trembling body close and tucked her under my chin. “And stop yelling. You’re scaring her.”
He stood frozen for several seconds before finally asking, “Are you kidding? That’s not a dog, Dev. That’s some sort of rodent.”
Holding on to my shaking dog with one arm, I reached out and punched Collin with the other. “She is not. She’s a cross between a Chihuahua and a Boston Terrier.”
His eyes got wide as he looked from my dog to me. “Bullshit!”
Okay, so he wasn’t completely off the mark. “The people at the animal shelter think she might have a little American Hairless Terrier in her, too.”
“The pound?” he asked incredulously. “You adopted this thing?”
“Stop calling her a thing,” I ground out. “Her name is Pogo.”
Pogo?!”

I smiled down at her when she reached up and licked my jaw again. “It’s because she looks like she’s bouncing on a pogo stick when she walks.”
