The Drawback of Single Dads - Lake Starlight #4 - By Piper Rayne (Hudson and Palmer)

ABOUT THE BOOK

He’s the father of my child and my best friend.

When Hudson and I met, somehow things just clicked between us. We had the same sense of humor and the same carefree attitude about our lives and goals. Neither of us wanted to lay down roots, we wanted to explore the world.

Then one night, too much alcohol and uncontrolled hormones led to the line blurring, and we fell into bed together only to discover a month later that we were more careless than we thought.

Like the upstanding guy he is, Hudson followed me back to my hometown of Lake Starlight, Alaska, where you can’t throw a penny and not hit one of my family members. We gave them the news that yes, we were having a baby but there would be no wedding. We loved each other but we weren’t in love.

Fast forward three years and we live side by side to make co-parenting our daughter easy. I’m a writer, and he’s a ski instructor. We’ve worked out all the rough edges. Life is good.

Until out of nowhere, things start to change. He has a girlfriend, we’re arguing more than ever, and it feels as if someone has come along and popped our perfect bubble. I’m not sure we’re ever going to fit back inside it now because things are developing. Things like feelings.

I received a complimentary early release e-book prior to release and am voluntarily leaving a review.

This is the romance of Palmer Ferguson and Hudson, her bestie and baby daddy. This story doesn't really begin here. It actually begins in Palmer's parents' book, Rules for Dating Your Ex, which is one of the last Bailey books, which was published in 2020. I highly suggest you read that book first. Its stars are Jamison and Sedona Bailey, two of my favorite characters and Palmer's their child. That story ends and you think everything is all happiness and lightness and then you read this story and you see how that story really impacted Palmer even though she was 18 months at the time.

In this book we get to see her as a single mom, who is anti-marriage, and who is a romance writer with a best friend who is her baby daddy, and they live next door to each other while they both coparent their adorable daughter Adley.

One thing I really liked was that Palmer in the original book was deaf and in this book she is deaf too. She uses sign language a lot to communicate and at times she uses it to keep a wall up with people she doesn't know, like her baby daddy, Hudson's new girlfriend, Theresa.

We get to see a lot of Harper in this book. She is very close with both Hudson and Palmer and is also Palmer's cousin. She also babysits a lot for Palmer and I loved watching her with Adley. One thing I wish we had more scenes with were Sedona and Jameson. They do appear in this book and in pivotal scenes, I just wish we had MORE scenes with them.

This book was a really fast read and was a pretty light book. It really is about Palmer's journey, and she has to face her heart and is at a crossroads of sorts. There is a bit of a double triangle here and I hate triangles, but it worked really well here. In a way it was designed to be the shock that Palmer needs to face so she can make some decisions about what she wants her future to be.
