About
the Book
All he ever wanted was to matter to someone.
What he didn’t know was that he did matter to someone.
Someone that worried about him every single day that he was gone.

Malachi Gabriel Gnocchi was missing for two years. Thanks to a mission gone
wrong, not only had he been captured, but his best friend along with his fellow
teammates had been taken, too.
He spent two years in hell, hoping and praying that one day he’d get to go
home.
And one day he does. Only, he isn’t the same person that left. Every single
thing that made him Malachi is no more.

Sierra started writing to soldiers overseas through the soldier pen pal program
when she was in high school. Years later, she had no idea that the one soldier
that she’d been paired up with in the very beginning would be the one man that
would change her world eight years down the road.
When the letters from her soldier stopped, she knew that something bad had
happened.
When they started back up again two years after the last letter, she thought
that someone was playing a joke on her.
Only, that joke wasn’t a joke at all.
The man on the other end of those letters is a man that’s dying slowly from the
inside out.
He’s a living, breathing, mess and there’s only one thing she can do to help
him.
Write him back and hope that she can bring him back from the edge.

I am a newer Lani Lynn Vale fan and this book was a story I have been highly anticipating since Frankie and Luca's romance in If You Say So (KPD Motorcycle Patrol, Book 6).
Now if you haven't read that story, here are some spoilers so skip this paragraph, though when you read this story its explained as well. if you have read the story well here are some reminders of what happened: In that story Luca was believed dead and instead he thought he was Malachi. It is then discovered that Malachi is the one who died but then later they find out Malachi is not dead but he was a prisoner and he was rescued. And that brings him back to town.
Now this story is part of the SWAT 2nd Generation series and it starts from the beginning and we meet a very young Sierra. She is the daughter of Mercy and Miller in Execution Style (Book 4 of the Code 11-KPD SWAT) of which I have not read yet. She hates writing and her teacher gives the class a penpal assignment and she gets Malachi. They become really great friends while he is deployed and in the military and then he goes missing on her. She keeps writing but doesn't hear anything for years until her old english teacher contacts her that she received a letter. And so starts this absolutely awesome and wonderful story.
To some degree I found the fact that they live in the same town and know the same people and still haven't figured out who they each are a bit on the silly part. To some degree I felt that they should have known unless they just didn't want to put the pieces together. The whole Luca and Malachi thing was really big news so its hard to believe not everyone knew the whole story and Sierra hadn't figured it out then. But I also loved how they figured things out too in this story and it was pretty wonderful reveal when they do finally put the pieces together.
I have read many books by this author and I have to say this story was my absolute favorite and one that I adored and will read over and over again, its just so sweet and romantic.
There are some plot twists I kinda figured out super early in relation to Sierra. Now Mercy does some things in this story I did not love but I LOVED Miller in this story. I felt he is totally there for Sierra. And Sammy in this story was so awesome, I loved him before but I love him even more in this story.
If you are a Lani Lynn Vale fan or you have loved this series or if you are a new reader who loves secret pen pals falling for each other, you will adore this story and not be able to put it down.
