This is a modern-day fairytale of I guess Cinderella in a very small town with Tiffani as the evil stepmother who wants to sell Lola's family diner out from under her before a restaurant gets built next door. It includes two stepsisters who Lola does not like and the prince, Jackson who was once Lola's friend until he wasn't. And her fairy god mother is a guy she works with who is gay, Georgie.
The first part of the book takes place from age 9, for Lola and Jackson is 11, until she is 18 and he is 20. And he is only her friend for a very short time, he is her enemy for many more years than he was her friend. He says mean thing, humiliates her and excludes her from things. I really HATED him, but he has a sister Vanessa and I kind of loved her.
The story then picks up 5 years later and Lola's father is dead, she is at the mercy of her stepmother and her stepsisters when she runs into Vanessa and Vanessa is engaged and invites her and the town to her masquerade engagement party.
That is when she runs into now 25-year-old Jackson. Jackson is finally ready for her but is she ready for him? He has a lot to make up for and before any romance can happen Lola needs to let the past go and forgive Jackson.
In the story Jackson has several secrets but I loved how clear he saw himself and his motivations. I also loved in the five years he knew that he needed to work on himself so he could learn how to win Lola's heart.
This was a very romantic story with some secrets and a man who is extremely romantic. I really loved this story so much and Jackson's heart totally won me over.
